Cob and Straw FSC Cedar Greenhouse

Picture
From late April until now (Sept 9th), most of my time has been dedicated to the construction of a large cedar-framed greenhouse, with  cob and straw infill. The overall dimensions are 52'x21'.

The Western Red Cedar is FSC certified  and comes from my lumber supplier here in OR.

The straw provides some insulation on the north side, and the cob provides thermal mass which can absorb heat from the sun and radiate it back into the greenhouse during cold nights.

We sited the building, built the foundation and stemwall, framed the building, put on the standing-seam metal roof and then it was my job to lead several free workshops and teach some great community members and friends the natural building techniques of cob, straw, slipstraw and plaster.

Currently, we are installing the triple-wall polycarbonate lexan glazing that will cover and protect this passive solar powerplant!
